Why Constant Motion? The Story Behind Our Ever-Evolving Digital Media Laboratory
By Isabel Canete-Medina, Founder, Constant Motion Studio
The most interesting things in life are those that move. Watch the sun and moon travel across the sky and you’re watching change happen in real time. Change is constant, and change is only possible with motion. Movement is how we know something is alive. When we stop moving, something in us begins to die.
That idea has been with me since 2006, when Constant Motion Studio first took shape in my mind.
From Idea to Studio
At the time, I was leading Canete Medina Consulting Group Inc., the Chicago-based transportation planning firm, where I currently serve as Managing Principal. Digital media was changing fast, reshaping how people communicated and took in information. I envisioned a laboratory for thinking differently about planning, design and digital media—not just a place to create visual materials, but as a platform to explore ideas, solve problems, plan experiences, and turn concepts into tangible outcomes. Over the years, the vision continued to develop. Technology changed. Design practices evolved. New tools emerged. And the possibilities for digital experiences expanded.
Good Design Begins Before the Design Itself
My background in planning shapes how I approach creative work. Before creating a website, digital experience, visual identity, or communication system, there are questions that need to be asked:
What are we trying to accomplish? Who are we trying to reach? What information or experience do people need? And how can design make that experience better?
Digital media is a process of discovery, where research, planning, creativity, and technology work together toward clarity. The goal isn’t just to make something look good. It’s to make something purposeful.
Motion Doesn’t Always Mean Forward
Change and progress are not the same thing. Moving “forward” doesn’t always mean progress. Some-times the right move is to step back to reassess, reflect, recalibrate, and learn before moving forward again. Forward, sideways, backward, up, down, or turning 360 degrees, all of it is change. The same change can mean progress for some and regression for others. As a planner, I take that seriously, because every de-sign decision affects people differently. This studio’s own path proves the point. It took 16 years to go from idea to launch. Sometimes an idea needs time to develop, or technology needs to catch up with the vision.
Designing for a World That Changes
Natural environments are always changing, throughout the day, the seasons, and the years. Built envi-ronments should do the same—buildings, cities, and urban areas should be planned, designed, and built to celebrate change in everyday life. Digital media is no different. Audiences, technology, and communi-cations keep evolving, so the creative process has to keep evolving too.
Finally in Motion
Launching the Constant Motion Studio website in 2022 brought the vision to life as mostly creative, ex-perimental work, but the work continues today. The studio remains focused on the intersection of plan-ning, design, digital media, and creative problem-solving. It is a space for asking questions, exploring possibilities, testing ideas, and creating meaningful digital experiences.
After years in development, Constant Motion Studio is finally in motion. And, true to its name, we intend to keep it that way. If you have an idea or challenge you want to explore, get in touch!
